Australia's firearm regulations are widely regarded as a global benchmark, yet systematic gaps remain and addressing them is key to preventing future firearm related tragedies
On 1 July 2024, the National Firearms Register (NFR) Implementation Program commenced. The NFR will function as a unified system information from existing Commonwealth, state and territory firearms registries, portals and management platforms into one centralised database. This will provide national oversight by providing a clear end to end view of firearms, ownership and licensing information across all states and territories. The NFR will enhance police and community safety and improve law enforcement capability.
